Scuba Diving in Fiji

July 27, 2007

Dive Site: Pipeline
Location: Just off the coast of Levuka, Ovalau, Fiji
Description: Reef
Depth: 30 – 40 metres (100 – 130 feet)
Visibility: 5 – 20 metres (15 – 65 feet)

Levuka is the old Capital of Fiji. It now remains as a quaint, off-the-beaten-track destination for visitors with a little time on their hands. Those who do make the effort are rewarded with colonial French architecture and the lingering smell of fish that emanates from the tuna cannery at the southern end of town.

Where the cannery spews its waste out into the sea, some 40+m below the reef top, is the setting for a not too pretty but exhilarating dive. The reef is littered with debris from ships entering the harbour, tangled fishing line and a plethora of vehicle tyres. The water column however is packed with fish. Said hello to a school of barracuda and wheeled out of the way when a huge school of snapper barrelled past.
