Scuba Diving in Fiji

July 16, 2007

Dive Site: Dream Maker
Location: Thakau Vatu Latha (Sail Rock Reef), 10 minutes northwest of Nananu-i-Ra
Description: Reef
Depth: 20 metres (65 feet)
Visibility: 10 – 20 metres (30 – 65 feet)

This is a beautiful little dive site comprising five large coral heads, closely spaced, with a network of caves and swim-throughs separating them from each other. There is a slight current running consistently across this section of reef that feeds the enormous volume of soft corals which live in the narrow passageways. Colourful is not a word that does this dive site justice; dendronepthia comes in yellows, purples and pinks; sea whips come in green and red and corkscrew around everywhere; gorgonian fan corals come in green, orange, yellow and range in size from dustbin lid to Hubble satellite dish! On the outside edge of the site where it drops off into deeper water there is a resident school of red snapper and frequent sightings of sharks, sea kraits and, in season, tuna and mackerel. This is the type of dive site for which Fiji is renowned.
